  YEAR FOR PRIESTS

St. Cloud Diocesan Council of Catholic Women at 25008 Mary St., Paynesville, MN 56362 US - ORGANIZATION

ORGANIZATION

Arleen Roelike, Vice President
HAPPY BIRTHDAY COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN

Ninety years ago in March, 1920, the U S Catholic Bishops, in recognition of the work of Catholic Women across the nation called women together in Washington DC. Each diocese sent at least one woman as a representative.  The organization was named the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW). It brought together all Catholic women’s groups. Minnesota was well represented and the organization’s first president was Gertrude Hill Gavin, daughter of James J. Hill.

This new organization gave women a unified voice, an organized service organization, and a channel to reach out to each other. The mission statement reads in part,” The National Council of Catholic Women acts through its membership to support, empower and educate all Catholic Women in spirituality, leadership and service.”

Through the years women have worked to emphasize the sanctity of marriage, educate women on the dangers of birth control and abortion. Immigration, poverty, slavery, human trafficking, and just working laws are issues that have been part of what women fight for.

After World War II, a war relief services committee was founded to help children overseas. In 1955 this became Catholic Relief Services. Imagine where we’d be without that.

The Madonna plan began as a program to feed women and children in Africa, and expanded into other poor nations. In the 1960’s the NCCW brought a little know nun from Calcutta

to speak about the poverty in India. After that gathering Mother Teresa became well known and her mission was able to expand.

And so we have a celebration to attend. It is a time to
rejoice in the long and proud history of service of the National Council of Catholic Women. We can renew our friendships, our faith, and our purpose. Now it is time to commemorate this joyous occasion.

Please join us at our 90th birthday celebration. It will be held in Washington, DC November 10-13, 2010. It promises to be a joy filled spiritual and enlightening gathering.

The convention agenda includes some of the following: Bishop Robert Morneau, Auxiliary Bishop, Diocese of Green Bay Rick Schatz: President and CEO, National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families Todd Scribner, Education Outreach Coordinator – Human Trafficking, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. There will also be presentations about persons with disabilities, climate change, theology of the body, hunger and poverty. On Saturday there will a Eucharistic liturgy at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Everything will end with a birthday celebration with dinner music and entertainment. Please join us. On the backside of this newsletter page is a registration form. It is also available on line. See the latest “Catholic Woman” for more detailed information.
